課程概述

This course, designed as one option in the DFFL Required Fiction Category, focuses on contemporary classic novels, either originally penned or translated into English (but not Chinese), of predominantly LGBTQ themes. Each time the course is offered, either two shorter novels of different LGBTQ-related themes (e.g. one lesbian and one gay) or a longer one will be selected for reading, discussing, and analyzing throughout the semester, with the emphasis not only on the text(s) but also on the cultural context(s) and historical background(s). The texts chosen for this semester are: Jean Genet’s determinedly antisocial male homosexual novel set in WWII, Funeral Rites (1953), and Rita Mae Brown’s no less rebellious postwar lesbian Bildungsroman Rubyfruit Jungle (1973). 

課程目標
Besides familiarizing students with the novel genre by actually leading them through some specific examples—which is believed to be the original setup of the Required Fiction Category—the special focus of this particular course lies in introducing students to contemporary LGBTQ cultures, histories, as well as representational politics
